Precipitation has declined by 20% in the current water year (started Oct. 2014) from the previous year.

Iran registered 183 mm of rainfall in the current water year, as against 229 mm in the previous year, reports IRNA.

Vice President Mohammad Shariatmadari said Iran has earmarked $10 billion to harness cross-border water resources as part of the efforts to tackle water crisis in the country.

Deputy Minister of Interior Esmaeil Najjar said more than 500 Iranian cities are struggling with drinking water shortage.

The UN has labeled the water crisis as Iran’s “most important human security challenge in the coming decades.”
