Tehran Bus Services Privatization

Tehran bus services are planned to be relinquished to the private sector after strategic assessment and negotiations are carried out, said head of Tehran City Council’s Technical Development Commission Ahmad Donyamali.

At present, the buses are purchased by the municipality and then released to the private sector, but “this faced problems” in implementation. “We are trying to indigenize the methods employed by the world’s 10 largest megacities in privatization of bus services in the country,” he said, quoted by Mehr News Agency.

The plan is in the preliminary stage and the buses operating now will be phased out and replaced with a new fleet by the time the scheme is finalized. Currently, Tehran is short of 3,000 to 4,000 buses.
