Iran, with over 250 oncology specialty centers and 10 bone marrow transplant centers, has undergone considerable growth in the field of hematology and oncology in the past few years, said Prof. Ardeshir Ghavamzadeh, the first physician who performed a successful human bone marrow transplant in the country, and declared the world’s top researcher in the field of cancer and blood diseases in 2011. “Approximately 440 bone marrow transplants are performed in Iran each year with a 78 percent rate of success,” Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying.  Bone marrow transplantation is mostly performed in Urumia, Shiraz, Kerman, Tabriz and Kermanshah cities, which are in West Azerbaijan, Fars, Kerman, East Azerbaijan and Kermanshah provinces, respectively.
