A working group was tasked by the State Welfare Organization (SWO) to scrutinize autism to monitor the process of providing scientific and medical assistance to those with the disorder, said SWO managing director Dr. Anoushiravan Mohseni Bandpei.

Due to the rising rate of autism in the country, a working group was assigned to study the issue, ILNA quoted him as saying. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child’s life. Autism is highly heritable, but the cause includes both environmental factors and genetic susceptibility.

The SWO pays for all medical expenses of autistic people under its coverage. Other patients are to receive medical care from public and private organizations.
