Rahmatollah Hafezi, head of the commission of health, environment, and city services at Tehran City Council, has warned about high nitrate levels in the capital’s drinking water supply.

Dam water supply contains 10% nitrate which is acceptable for drinking. But deep wells’ water contains 60% nitrate. At present, Tehran drinking water supply is a combination of water from dams and wells and therefore contains 30% nitrate, exceeding the permissible limit.

“Given the high cost of water treatment, it is recommended that part of the funds should be spent on providing cheap bottled water to citizens. Piped water can be utilized for other purposes since only 1% of the water is used for drinking,” IRNA quoted him saying.
