Iran is self-sufficient in production of polio, mumps, measles, rubella, and DTP (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis) vaccines, said Behzad Ghareyazie, director general of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII).

“Iran is also the first country in the world to produce transgenic rice,” Ghareyazie said, quoted by Mehr News Agency.

“We produced transgenic rice in 2004 and cultivated it in 2005; no pesticides are used in cultivating transgenic produce which is healthy and economically viable as crop yields are higher.” The 3rd Iranian Biotechnology Festival will be held in Tehran International Permanent Fairground, May 21-23, he added.
