In the current year (started March 21), the Iranian Association of Kidney Patients, has decided to pay $4500 to each donor. “The payment seeks to pay the donors ‘not technically to buy the kidney’, but rather as compensation for the pain and suffering of undergoing a major surgery,” IRNA quoted Hashem Qasemi, association head, as saying.
According to a survey, in 2010, a total of 2,285 kidney transplants took place in the country, of which 1,690 kidneys were from volunteers and 595 from those declared brain-dead.
