Iran Wins Seat at UN Women’s Body

Iran was elected to the executive board of the United Nations gender equality body for a three-year term.

The 54-member UN Economic and Social Council held a secret ballot on the uncontested Asia-Pacific regional slate for UN- Women Executive Board, which was created by the United Nations in 2010 to accelerate progress on meeting women’s needs worldwide, Mehr News Agency reported.  Iran received 36 votes out of 53 to obtain a 3-year membership starting Jan. 1, 2016.
