Police will beef up security around shopping malls and crowded places prior to the Nowroz or New Year’s shopping season. Crime Prevention Police Chief, Brigadier General Hossein Khancharli said police special operations around Tehran Grand Bazaar have already commenced, with police forces increasing every two weeks, ISNA reported. Khancharli added police security measures include an increase in foot as well as vehicle patrols plus help from neighborhood vigilantes. The Iranian New Year starts on March 21, with many people choosing to travel during the long holidays. The police department officers are on alert until the holidays culminate on April 2 – known as ‘Sizdah Bedar’ celebration.
