Annually 6000 to 7000 corneal transplants are performed in the country of which 15% are conducted at Tehran’s Farabi Eye Hospital, said Dr. Mahmoud Jabarvand, head of the hospital, on the eve of the 80th anniversary of corneal transplants Iran.
Corneal graft was the first organ transplant in the country, Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying. With important advances in surgical methods over the decades, 80 percent of patient’s vision is restored, he said.
The 450-bed Farabi hospital is the largest eye referral center in Iran which is affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
