The current water year (started Sept 23) has seen the worst spell of drought in the past eight-year period, said Mohammad Haj-Rasouliha, managing director of Iran Water Resources Management Company.

Nearly 63% of the country’s drinking water is supplied by groundwater sources, he noted.

At present Shiraz, Isfahan, Tehran, Kerman, Bandar Abbas and Mashhad “are facing a decline in water resources due to climate change and lack of precipitation,” he added.

Forecasts indicate that low precipitation in the country will be 11 times worse than the current situation by the year 2050.
