converters in motor vehicles will reduce 90 percent of air pollution, said Ali Mohammad Shaeri, head of Tehran Municipality’s environment and sustainable development headquarters.
“The municipality is making efforts to install catalytic converters in old vehicles which contribute highly to air pollution; vehicles account for 70% of air pollution, with motorbikes playing a crucial role,” Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying.
Shaeri also said that in the current year (ends March 20), a total of 94 days had been classified as “polluted’, despite extreme improvement in fuel quality and the halt in influx of polluting aerosols from western borders.
The air quality index for Tehran “has greatly improved in the last 10 months compared to the previous years.”
