The police commander of Sistan-Baluchestan Province said 1,342 kilograms of opium were seized from smugglers during two separate operations in Saravan city in the southeast on Saturday.

Brigadier-General Hossein Rahimi said the anti-narcotic squad received a tip-off that armed smugglers were carrying drugs in a Toyota, following which they initiated the raids, IRNA reported.

Saravan police managed to identify the automobile on Kouhak-Saravan Road, he said, adding that when the police tried to stop the vehicle the driver attempted to escape.

However, police forces tracked the vehicle which was abandoned and the occupants had fled in the dark, Rahimi said, noting that police found close to 800 kilograms of opium hidden in the car.

In another operation in the city, police confiscated 555 kilograms of opium, he said.
