Seven new vehicles will be added to Yazd's fleet of 27 tourist taxis next week, the chief executive of Yazd Tourist Taxi Company said.

Speaking to ISNA, Jalal Dehqan added that the vehicles will be unveiled during the Government Week (August 24-30).

"Yazd is one of the top five destinations of Iran, yet the state of public transport is abysmal," he said.

To enhance the fleet, Omid Entrepreneurship Fund offers loans at 4% interest to drivers that want to join the company.

"Drivers have to be vetted and approved by the company and Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization before they can apply for the loans," Dehqan said, adding that loans cover a maximum of 80% of a car's value.

Drivers are supposed to have at least a working knowledge of the English language and be familiar with the city's attractions to provide tourists with a short background on each site.

Yazd, which is the capital of Yazd Province, was a center of Zoroastrian culture. It is an architecturally unique city also known in Iran for the high quality of its handicrafts, especially silk weaving, and confectionery.

Earlier this year, the city's historical texture was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming Iran's 22nd world heritage site.
