Top German art institute Bundeskunsthalle will help restore the Sadr al-Olama House in Yazd and repurpose it into what officials refer to as Yazd Grand Museum.

The details of the agreement were discussed at a meeting on Monday between Fatemeh Danesh Yazdi, the head of Yazd Province’s office of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Organization, and Bernhard Spies, corporate manager at Bundeskunsthalle, ISNA reported.

The historical house, which was repurposed into a small museum last year, is a late Safavid-era building located in the historical texture of the provincial capital Yazd. With the help of Bundeskunsthalle, whose official English title is the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, local authorities plan to turn the house into a modern museum.

“The building definitely needs to be restored in steps … It requires thorough planning,” Yazdi said.

Describing the joint project as a “turning point in Iran-Germany relations”, she said the experience of German experts and artists will be of immense help.

“The museum must be equipped with the latest technology,” Yazdi added.

Spies said Sadr al-Olama House is a symbol of Iran’s rich art and an outstanding work of architecture.

He said once the restoration is complete, the house will become unique in the sense that “it will be a historical structure housing ancient relics while boasting the most modern technology”.

Inaugurated in 1992, the Bundeskunsthalle is a unique venue, which has set new standards with a varied program of exhibitions devoted to art and cultural history of all eras.

By working closely with many of the leading museums and galleries around the world, Bundeskunsthalle has established an international network of links with fellow cultural institutions.
