Swans Arrive Early at Sorkhroud Wetlands

Close to 150 Whooper (pronounced hooper) swans have migrated to the Sorkhroud wetlands in the northern province of Mazandaran. Every year numerous wild birds choose the province’s wetlands as their winter resting place. This year, however, the annual migration to Sorkhroud wetland began a month earlier, IRNA reported. Each year, in late December, different species of swans numbering in the thousands travel to Sorkhroud wetlands to spend the winter in the 60-hectare area. Last year, the number reached 5,000 prompting environmentalists to distribute corn over the area, to ensure the birds did not run out of food.
