Iran is mulling the extension of the duration of its visa-on-arrival to three months, according to a high-ranking tourism official.

Iran’s airport visa was originally valid for 14 days, but was extended to 30 days last October.

As part of plans to attract more tourists to the country, Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization has proposed a further extension, which has to be approved by the Foreign Ministry, IRIB News Agency reported, quoting ICHHTO chief Masoud Soltanifar as saying.

Once the law comes into effect, nationals of all countries (except Colombia, Somalia, USA, UK, Canada, Bangladesh, Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India) holding a valid ordinary passport and wishing to visit Iran will obtain a 90-day Tourist Visa Upon Arrival at six airports in Iran, including Imam Khomeini and Mehrabad in Tehran and Mashhad, Shiraz, Tabriz and Isfahan airports.

The applicant must have a confirmed return ticket and a valid passport with at least six months validity and a photo to be attached to the application form plus a visa stamp fee.

This type of visa is only available to tourists, journalists and reporters on mission. Those whose applications for Iranian visa have been rejected before and Iranians holding foreign passports but still maintaining their Iranian nationality are not entitled to receive visa-on-arrival, according to Iranvisa.com.
