The majority of provinces filled more hotel rooms during the March 17-27 period, which coincided with the Iranian New Year holiday season (March 20 – April 1), compared to the same period last year.

According to Jamshid Hamzezadeh, president of the Iranian Hoteliers’ Society, the occupancy rate of hotels improved between 5% and 20% in the 11-day period, Mehr News Agency reported.

“With a 20% increase, Khuzestan Province saw the biggest boost in guest numbers,” he said.

Furthermore, occupancy rates in Zanjan, Isfahan, Hormozgan, East Azarbaijan and Kerman provinces increased by 5% to 15%, but some regions saw their numbers plummet, including Khorasan Razavi Province which receives more than a third of Iran’s inbound visitors, most of whom travel to the provincial capital Mashhad on pilgrimage to the shrine of the Eighth Imam of Shia Muslims Imam Reza (PBUH).

“Hotels in Khorasan Razavi saw their arrivals fall by 30% during this period,” Hamzezadeh said, without elaborating the reasons for the unusual decline in numbers.

Other provinces where hotels also saw declining figures were Mazandaran, Gilan and Fars.
