The first phase of Bushehr’s seaside resort in south Iran, covering 15 hectares, is scheduled  to open during the 11-day Fajr ceremonies (February 1-11).

The annual event commemorates the 10 days leading up to the victory of the Islamic Revolution (February 11) in 1979.

At a meeting last week in the port city to discuss details of the project, authorities decided to get the private sector involved in order to accelerate the process, the deputy for investment and tourism at the provincial office of the Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Nasser Amirzadeh, was quoted by Mana News Agency as saying.

“It was agreed to facilitate investment by private companies by curbing bureaucracy involved in issuing permits,” the official said, adding that six private investors have so far expressed interest in financing the project.

Provincial budget has been used to develop basic infrastructure, such as the water supply system, access routes and power network, leaving the development of leisure facilities, such as marine sports infrastructure and beaches, to private companies.

Other facilities, such as restaurants and water parks, are expected to be ready before the two-week Norouz holiday season (March 20 – April 3). Future phases target the establishment of hotels, beach houses, fishing facilities and a marina for cruise ships.

Once complete, the entire project is expected to cover about 100 hectares of the city’s coast.

Amirzadeh said the project can be a “revolutionary step”, paving the way for future beach resorts off Iran’s southern coasts — the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

“It can revolutionize marine tourism in the south [of Iran].”

The key trade port of Bushehr is located in the hot Persian Gulf region and experiences mild temperatures throughout the year. Average annual temperature in the city is 24 degrees Celsius.
