Authorities in Paris are making significant strides in cracking down on crime against tourists.

Police have confirmed that their ongoing efforts to beef up patrols at popular tourist attractions throughout the French capital have been met with encouraging results.

In a Tuesday briefing, police official Philippe Prunier said thefts were down by as much as 17% this past summer as compared to the same period of 2014, with authorities making nearly 4,000 arrests.

With pickpockets often targeting popular attractions in hopes that tourists will be carrying large sums of cash, police have ramped up their presence in many of those areas, which include the Eiffel Tower, museums and retail stores.

Last month, a Chinese tourist guide was robbed of more than $28,000 worth of cash and valuables by three men while exiting a coach bus outside Paris.

Nonetheless, authorities have triumphed in other instances. For example, in May, police announced the arrest of a pickpocketing ring that was reportedly responsible for stealing more than $4,000 a day from tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower.

Authorities admit that carjackings remain an issue outside of the airport, but also note that public transit thefts are currently down, which is encouraging for both locals and tourists alike.
