French Support for Yazd’s UNESCO Inscription

Experts from the France-based International Center for Earthen Architecture, CRAterre, have traveled to Yazd to help local cultural heritage officials complete the dossier for Yazd historical texture’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Mojtaba Farahmand, director of the Research Center of Historical City of Yazd, announced that this is the group’s second visit in six months, ISNA reported.
CRAterre is the Center for the Research and Application of Earth Architecture based in the School of Architecture of Grenoble University, France.
Farahmand said the dossier is 50% complete, adding that sections describing the site justify its inscription on the coveted list.
“The next two sections include monitoring the site, which ensures it is in a presentable condition, and devising a management plan, which details steps to protect, preserve and manage the world heritage site,” he said.
During their month-long stay, CRAterre experts will use their experience with adobe architecture to complete the last section of the dossier.
Quoting Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Farahmand announced that Iran has until November 22 to submit the documents to UNESCO.
“This calls for increased effort and close collaboration between all involved entities,” he said.
The historical texture of Yazd was inscribed on the National Heritage List in 2005.
The historical city of Susa in Khuzestan Province and the ancient Meymand Village in Kerman Province were inscribed on the list during the World Heritage Committee’s 39th session in Bonn in July, increasing the number of world heritage sites in Iran to 19.
