So far, some 962 sites have been registered on UNESCO world heritage list. Of this number, 745 sites are cultural; 188 are natural; and the remaining 29 are of both cultural and natural significance, Iranian Student’s Tourism and Traveling Agency (ISTTA) reported.

Based on its users’ feedbacks, the world’s largest travel site, tripadvisor.com, has prepared some statistical information on most popular sites of the world. According to the information, the ancient city of Persepolis in Fars and Safavid square of Naqsh-e Jahan in Isfahan are among the most visited sites.

Other popular sites include erstwhile chief residence of the Dalai Lama, Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet; Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, England, named after a 30-meter cast iron bridge; Chateau de Fontainebleau, 55 km from the center of Paris; historical city of Guimaraes, Portugal; ancient fortress of Masada in eastern edge of Judaean Desert, where Herod I, Roman client king of Judea, built his castles; and the ancient city of Byblos, Lebanon, the oldest city alive.
