Ashouradeh as the only Iranian island in the Caspian Sea, is receiving more tourists and greater attention from the government these days.
The island is blessed with unique flora and fauna which has rendered it one of the 59 internationally valuable biosphere reserves. It is also of historical significance to the country, with a legacy of its previous Russian owners, which ended at the end of the Second World War.
A special working group in the CHHTO has been preparing a comprehensive tourism plan for the island.
Based on research, 380 hectares of the island is suitable for investment and development, the provincial head of CHHTO, Ghorban Abbasi, said on Saturday. However, he warned, any development should take into consideration the Island’s fragile ecosystem.
