A direct flight has been launched between Tehran and Sana’a, the Republic of Yemen.

A Yemeni delegation traveled to Iran last week to negotiate a deal to start the new route, one of officials involved told ISNA.

The source that wanted to remain anonymous, noted that up to 14 flights could be scheduled between the two countries every week. “The first flight, which took place on March 1, carried medicine as a sign of Iran’s benign intentions and friendship towards the people of Yemen. The flight route is a passenger route, however.”

As to which Iranian airlines are included in the deal, the official stated that all of the country’s airlines would be allowed to  fly on the route.

This is the first time that Yemen has signed an agreement with Iran to start air travel. Iran Civil aviation Organization (CAO) and Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority of Yemen have signed an agreement based on which Yemen National Airline and Iran’s Mahan Air can establish direct flights. The agreement could be implemented immediately.

The two sides discussed further collaboration in the areas of air transportation, training Yemeni aviation personnel, building airports, and other related measures to enhance Yemen’s aviation system.
