Water has been released into the imperiled Qurigol Lake located in the northwestern East Azarbaijan Province earlier than the past years due to its critical condition.
The plan was conducted after authorities of the regional water company voiced their concern about the lake's depletion. According to Mohammad Reza Feqhi, the head of the provincial Department of Environment, the lake's water right is released each year on Nov. 6, Mehr News Agency reported.
"If the project is conducted with no impediments, the whole water will be transferred to the lake by October 7," he said.
Located 40 kilometers west of Tabriz, the lake is spread across 200 hectares.
Together with the adjacent reed marshes, it is an important breeding ground of aquatic birds. It was registered under Ramsar Convention on 23 June 1975.
