An online portal has been launched by the Department of Environment to facilitate the process of obtaining hunting permits and monitor their issuance.

"This is in line with Iran's e-government policies and it has a number of advantages," Ali Teymouri, director of the Conservation, Hunting and Fishing Office, was quoted as saying by ISNA.

The portal helps compile a database of legal hunters, keep record of those who violate their permits, impose restrictions on individual permits and allow DOE to track down permit-holders when need be.

"As everything is done online, those seeking permits don't need to come down to DOE offices," he said. The portal is accessible through the DOE's website that is in Persian. Local offices of DOE can access the database at anytime.

Despite its launch, the portal is not yet ready to accept applications, but Teymouri said it will soon begin taking requests for bird hunting licenses.

The department is among the most understaffed government organization in Iran with only 2,600 park rangers employed to cover 17 million hectares of land under the department’s protection.

"The portal and the databank it keeps can help us relieve some of the pressure on park rangers," the official said without elaborating.
