The Department of Environment in Tehran has urged residents of the Iranian capital to report any bad smell in subway stations by calling the hotline 1540.

The smell is usually caused by poorly-treated or untreated wastewater that can have many sources, the head of Tehran's DOE office said.

"If the source of the wastewater is an industrial unit, we'll warn them only once. Failure to comply will result in prosecution," Mohammad Hossein Bazgir also told ISNA.

The official noted that wastewater from households that cause a stench in subway stations must be dealt with by the municipality and Energy Ministry.

Bazgir said treating wastewater is a legal obligation and disregarding it is a violation because it threatens public health.
