Ultraviolet index in Ahvaz, Khuzestan Province, has reached dangerously high levels, prompting calls for locals to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary. “Current readings suggest sun exposure carries a high risk,” Rouzbeh Kardouni, the head of Social Vulnerabilities Office at the Ministry of Labor, Cooperatives and Social Welfare, was quoted as saying by ILNA. A UV Index reading of 6 to 7 means high risk and strict protection against skin and eye damage is needed. This is while Ahvaz has registered the UV index 10, which “means residents should remain indoors”, the official said. The mercury in Ahvaz registered a sweltering 53.7°C on Friday for the second day in a row, which is said to be the hottest temperature ever recorded in June over mainland Asia, according to Washington Post. Khuzestan is among the hottest provinces in Iran, with numerous cities frequently registering temperatures as high as 50°C in summer. However, scorching temperatures at the beginning of spring are very rare.
