Iran Meteorological Organization is capable of forecasting natural disasters such as wildfires, floods and typhoons, a senior official at the organization said.

By analyzing certain patterns and weather phenomena, it is possible to predict climatic events. For instance, floods usually follow high amounts of precipitation, while high summer temperatures and influx of careless campers into a certain area increase the possibility of wildfires in forests.

Utilizing special software, the organization can warn the public of the possibility of disasters beforehand, giving them time to make preparations and/or get to safety. It also helps alleviate the impacts of such events on the environment by allowing those in charge to make necessary arrangements.

Ali Abedini, deputy for forecasting at IMO, described meteorological and climatic phenomena as mostly predictable and said being prepared for such events will lessen the severity of damage to people and nature.

"The IMO will establish a text messaging service center, through which the public will be kept informed and updated," he was quoted as saying by ISNA.

An agriculture weather text messaging service has been in operation for nearly two years, which provides farmers with weather reports and informs them of the best time to water their crops, among others. Pointing to more than a million subscribers to the agriculture weather text messaging service, Abedini emphasized the need for establishing similar services for natural disasters and air pollution.
