A total of 146 illegal water wells in North Khorasan Province were sealed last year (March 2015-16), according to Reza Naeimi, a deputy at the North Khorasan Regional Water Authority. “The sealing of the illegal wells and imposing limits on withdrawal from legal wells were among important measures taken to help conserve groundwater in the past year,” he was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency. According to the official, the closure of illegal well helps save 1.8 million cubic meters of water from going to waste, but there is more to be done as there are over 3,000 illegal wells in the province. Limiting withdrawal from legal wells and diligently monitoring the sources of water also helped save 21 million cubic meters of water last year, according to Naeimi. Each year, over 1.3 million cubic meters of water is extracted from authorized wells over and above the imposed limit. The existence of illegal wells has emerged as a major problem for the water authorities across the country trying to curb the high extraction and consumption rates, namely in the key agricultural regions.
