Household waste in the capital Tehran has surged by 30-40% during the past three weeks to 11,000 tons per day, according to the chief executive of the Tehran Waste Management Organization. “The increase in waste production is a normal occurrence at this time of the year,” said Hossein Jafari, according to the website asriran.com.  Waste production around the Iranian New Year (starts March 20) goes up every year due to the rise in family visits and shopping. “A large portion of the waste is actually recyclable, so we urge people to call our hotline and allow us to take it away,” Jafari said. The hotline 137 is available only in Tehran.
