Nearly 200 hectares of pristine forest have burned in the past two weeks in Gilan Province due to negligence.

Provincial officials say careless campers who failed to properly extinguish campfires are to blame for the disaster.

“Warm winds did not help matters at all and spread the fire far and wide,” Davoud Zare’, director of the provincial office of Forests, Range and Watershed Management Organization was quoted as saying by IRIB.

The forests burned across eleven counties and it took 113 firefighters from the provincial FRWO together with local volunteers to put out the fire.

Since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21), nearly 7,000 hectares of forests have burned due to carelessness, slow response and lack of modern firefighting equipment.
