The Department of Environment has named December 8 (Azar 17 on the Iranian calendar) “Feverish Planet Day” in an effort to raise public awareness about global warming and its impacts on Iran. According to a statement on the department’s website, the DOE in cooperation with the Forests, Range and Watershed Management Organization and the state-run television, will publicize the negative effects of climate change, especially on Iran, and encourage the public to do their part to help mitigate the effects of a warming Earth. Iran is a top 10 emitter of greenhouse gases and has pledged to curb its emissions by 4% relative to the business-as-usual scenario by 2030. Subject to international assistance, officials believe they can target a 12% reduction in emissions. The unconditional pledge is estimated to cost the Rouhani administration $17.5 billion, while meeting the conditional 12% target requires some $52.5 billion.
