Iran will expand cooperation with regional countries to help fight marine pollution and algal bloom, according to the aquatic biomes deputy at the Department of Environment.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday in Khorramshahr, Khuzestan Province, Parvin Farshchi said Iran and the regional states are committed to battling marine pollution, IRNA reported.

“At the national level, entities such as Iran Fisheries Organization, Ministry of Energy, Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science and Ministry of Agricultural Jihad are working closely to manage algal bloom in the Caspian Sea before it gets out of hand,” she said.

Farschi lamented environmental negligence and said, “Environmental programs have no place in the Fourth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2004-09) and were not given due attention in the Fifth Plan (2010-15).”

Nevertheless, she said DOE is ensuring the inclusion and execution of environmental targets in the sixth plan (2016-21).

Farshchi said DOE will continue to supervise environmental programs aimed at protecting the Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman, in cooperation with the Ports and Maritime Organization.
