In a special meeting held by the Expediency Council on environment last week, all attendees emphasized the importance of using diplomacy to address global environmental problems. Members of the council and representatives of Foreign, Energy, Oil, Agriculture and Industries ministries attended the meeting, Mehr News Agency reported.
Aside from diplomacy, encouraging public participation and supporting environmental NGOs were referred to as important policies to protect the environment.
Other policies included holding educational and research programs with other countries and using environmentally-friendly technology. The head of the council’s Environment Committee, Seyyed Mohammad Mojabi, said the approval of general environmental policies for the first time in the council is an important step forward.
He hoped that the effective implementation of such policies in the sixth five-year economic development plan (2016-21) could improve Iran’s environmental conditions.
