German Chancellor Angela Merkel once again said on Wednesday that Europe has decided to uphold the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and will keep trying to find solutions to avert escalation.
“Step by step we will keep trying to find solutions with Iran that prevent an escalation of tensions in a globally sensitive region. That’s our job,” Merkel told the lower house of parliament, Reuters reported.
Tensions between Tehran and Washington have soared since the US exited the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran.
The remaining parties to the deal, including the European participants, have been trying to work out solutions to preserve the deal but have so far failed to adopt effective measures to ensure Tehran’s economic interests, prompting the country to start reducing its commitment to the accord.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also on Tuesday called on all parties involved in the Iranian nuclear dispute to avoid military escalation and to act responsibly.
“Everyone must act responsibly now, otherwise we risk losing the chance to come to a peaceful resolution,” Maas was quoted as saying by DW.
“It would send a completely wrong signal if Iran halted its compliance with the agreement,” he added, stressing that a solution can be found.
