The 26th round of Tehran-Tokyo political consultations was held in the Iranian capital on Saturday between Japan's Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Takeo Mori and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi.
The two diplomats discussed ways of expanding bilateral ties as well as latest developments regarding Iran's 2015 nuclear deal and conditions in the Persian Gulf and West Asia, ISNA reported.
The region has been experiencing an escalation of tensions since the United States pulled out of the nuclear agreement last year and initiated a pressure campaign against Tehran.
Pointing to the recent “historic trip” by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Tehran, the deputy ministers expressed willingness to continue such high-level contacts.
Mori later met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif the same day and stressed that relations and regular dialogue with Tehran are of high importance to his country.
Zarif highlighted Abe's recent visit and his meeting with Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, expressing interest in continuing talks with Japan on mutual relations and regional issues.
