The deputy foreign minister said on Monday that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia was a “watershed” in relations between Tehran and Riyadh.

Hossein Amir Abdollahian painted an upbeat picture about promotion of diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia, expressing hope that Riyadh would take “positive steps in that direction,” ICANA reported.

The foreign minister on Saturday travelled to Saudi Arabia to attend a memorial service for the late Saudi King Abdullah.

A day later, in a press conference in Tehran, Zarif urged the Saudi government to adopt an approach based on “realism” and “good neighborliness” to be able to contribute to the stability of the region.

He also said Tehran and Riyadh have no problems in their bilateral relations, but both states should find a common solution to help overcome regional challenges “without foreign interference”, Fars news agency reported.
