Afghanistan's neighbors need to take steps to limit the scope of intervention by trans-regional states in the country's political crisis while strengthening connections with the Afghan opposition groups in coordination with the government in Kabul, a senior security official said.
Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani made the statement at a meeting with senior security officials from Afghanistan and its four other neighbors, namely Russia, China, India and Pakistan, in the Russian city of Ufa on Tuesday, ISNA reported.
The officials discussed the developments in the implementation of agreements reached during the first round of the meeting that was held in Tehran last year.
Shamkhani expressed concern over the growing political divide in Afghanistan, calling for continued assistance by neighbors to strengthen legal structures in Kabul with the participation of all parties.
He also offered Iran's proposals on multilateral efforts to facilitate the national reconciliation process in the war-torn country.
The participants agreed to hold the next meeting of the six country's high security representatives later this year in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
A protracted civil war has continued in Afghanistan since past 18 years between the government and insurgents of the Taliban militant group.
