The top Qatari diplomat voiced concerns over the escalation of tensions in the region arising from the intensified US pressure campaign against Iran.
Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani also welcomed Tehran-Doha consultations and the exchange of visits by senior officials of the two states on the issue, ISNA reported.
He made the remarks in a meeting with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi in Doha on Tuesday.
Araqchi described dialogue with regional countries as a priority for Tehran, stressing that a non-aggression pact, as proposed by Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif, can help increase trust among Persian Gulf states.
“Neighboring countries can help promote trust and constructive engagement through mechanisms such as the establishment of a regional dialogue forum in the Persian Gulf and the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty,” he said.
Zarif said during a recent visit to Iraq that Iran had offered to sign non-aggression agreements with all Persian Gulf countries.
