President Hassan Rouhani said he favors dialogue and diplomacy, but not under the current circumstances as the US has severely escalated pressure and made excessive demands to lift harsh sanctions against Iran.
“Today’s situation is not suitable for talks and our choice is resistance,” Rouhani said on Monday, IRNA reported.
US President Donald Trump on Monday once again said he is keen to hold talks with Iran with the aim of reaching a new nuclear deal that would also cover Iran’s missile development program and its regional influence.
Iranian officials have rejected Trump’s calls for negotiations, citing his insincerity and unreliability. They say the US needs to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal, which it ditched in May 2018, and make up for Tehran’s losses due to its departure before any new talks.
