Iran's New Envoy to UN Takes Office Iran's New Envoy to UN Takes Office

The new Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, submitted his credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Tuesday.
He was appointed UN envoy in early April to replace Gholamali Khoshroo, whose term came to an end last year due to a law that bans retirees from assuming public office, ISNA reported.
Takht-Ravanchi was the deputy presidential chief of staff for political affairs and had earlier served as the Iranian ambassador to Switzerland, deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs and special aide to the foreign minister.
He was also a senior member of the team holding talks with six major powers, which culminated in the landmark nuclear accord in 2015.
The veteran diplomat is accompanying Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif to the high-level plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly for marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
