President Hassan Rouhani’s “World Against Violence and Extremism” (WAVE) initiative was discussed in a meeting on Friday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, IRNA reported.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and President Rouhani’s chief of staff Mohammad Nahavandian co-chaired the meeting. A private meeting on WAVE was also held in Davos on Friday morning, which was attended by prominent international political figures, including former UN secretary general  Kofi Annan and Iraqi Vice President Ayad Allawi.

In December 2013, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to adopt the WAVE proposal as an official UN resolution. It invited all governments to become united in the face of all forms of violence and extremism, including sectarian violence.

Tehran last month hosted a two-day conference on WAVE which brought together representatives from over 40 countries.
