Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei offered condolences over the recent deadly crash of a cargo plane near Tehran and instructed officials to thoroughly investigate the accident.
In a message on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “I extend condolences over the bitter and sad crash of the plane carrying the conscientious personnel of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force and the demise of those on board,” his website reported.
“The relevant authorities must thoroughly look into the tragic incident to identify and take measures on the possible weaknesses, lapses and faults,” he added.
A Boeing 707 military cargo plane crashed on Monday during an emergency landing at Fath airport near Karaj in the central Iranian province of Alborz, killing 15 out of the 16 people on board.
"The plane was headed for Payam Airport, but landed at the nearby Fath Airport due to poor visibility," a Payam Airport official was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.
The aircraft overshot the runway during the landing and caught fire after hitting the perimeter wall of the airport.
