Senior Diplomat in Moscow to Discuss Region

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, senior assistant to the foreign minister on special political affairs, left Tehran on Wednesday for Moscow to hold consultations with Russian officials on regional issues.

ISNA reported that the main topic of discussions will be international efforts to restore peace and security to the war-ravaged Arab country.

Iran and Russia are the main backers of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in its fight against a protracted foreign-sponsored militancy.

Tehran through its military advisory support and Moscow by its air power have played a significant role in tilting the scale of the battle in favor of government forces who have managed to retake most of the territories overrun by militant groups.

The two countries, along with Turkey that supports some rebel groups, are spearheading international efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
