Qatari Premier, Zarif Discuss Ties, Region

Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif held talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani on a host of issues, including ways to boost bilateral relations, in Doha on Saturday.

The two sides discussed regional security and stability, and expressed support for initial agreements reached at talks in Sweden by the opposing sides in Yemen’s war, ISNA reported.

Iran’s chief diplomat had traveled to the Qatari capital to attend the Doha Forum 2018 that began on Saturday and closes on Sunday.

Established in 2000, the Doha Forum is a platform for global dialogue on critical challenges facing the world. It aims to promote exchange of ideas, discourse, policymaking and action-oriented recommendations to find solutions to common global challenges.

Qatar has forged closer economic ties with Iran since Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut off travel and trade ties with Doha in June 2017 due to its alleged support for terrorism and close relations with Iran. Qatar denies backing terrorism and says the boycott impinges on its sovereignty.

Iran, which supported Qatar in the row, flew in food supplies to the import-dependent country amid concerns of shortages arising from the embargo.

Qatar Airways recently announced that it will add more flights to Iran from January, just weeks after the United States reimposed sanctions targeting Iranian banks, oil and shipping sectors following its withdrawal from an international nuclear deal with Tehran in May.
