While US officials are traveling from place to place and maneuvering to increase economic pressure on Iran, it is essential that a diplomatic team from Tehran be commissioned to maintain regular contact with other countries to negate the destructive efforts, a lawmaker said.
After withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major world powers in May, the US resumed its sanctions on Tehran.
Besides, it has vowed to impose a set of secondary measures on any country that continues doing business with Iran. This includes the purchase of Iranian oil, although a number of its buyers have been offered temporary waivers by the US to gradually replace their source of crude.
Along this line, the US is pressing on with a series of engagements designed to explain US sanctions policy against Iran to governments around the world and is convincing or compelling them to end their cooperation with Tehran.
A latest example was a visit by an interagency team of experts from the US departments of state and treasury to Yerevan, the Armenian capital, in mid-November to discuss Iran sanctions policies with counterparts in the Armenian government and business community.
Incremental Pressure
“It is evident that the US is conducting its economic warfare against Iran in a step-by-step manner, seriously pursuing its objectives,” said Mohammad Ebrahim Rezaei, a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, ICANA reported.
The condition, according to Rezaei, calls for tapping the potential of economic and political diplomacy, and holding serious negotiations with other countries in parallel with the Americans’ drive.
“The country’s diplomatic team should visit all neighboring countries and elaborate on the ineffectiveness of secondary sanctions to their authorities and private companies,” he said.
"It is necessary to come up with strategies to exploit US weaknesses and turn its own unilateral approach into an instrument to stand up to its hostile policies."
Rezaei also stressed that the parliament needs to assume the command of the economic war and assign duties to related entities.
