A UN official for humanitarian affairs met with a senior Iranian diplomat to discuss conflicts in the Middle East and ways to help the war-affected people of Yemen.
United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Partnerships with the Middle East and Central Asia Rashid Khalikov held talks with Iranian foreign minister’s special assistant for political affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, in Tehran on Sunday, Tasnim News Agency reported.
The two officials talked about cooperation between Iran and the UN on humanitarian issues, including efforts to help crisis-stricken countries in West Asia.
Khalikov and Ansari discussed the dire humanitarian conditions in Yemen and an upcoming international conference on humanitarian assistance for Yemeni people.
Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against Yemen to restore power to the ousted president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
Over 15,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
