Deputy Police Chief Eskandar Momeni said police forces have confiscated more than 500 tons of various kinds of narcotics over the past nine months.

In a speech in Tehran on Monday, Momeni pointed to police measures to control the country’s eastern borders with Afghanistan and prevent the entry of narcotics and said the measures have been extended to western borders, Tasnim News Agency reported.

"Police have carried out some 1,000 anti-drug operations over the past nine months, seizing more than 500 tons of various kinds of illicit drugs," he said.

Momeni noted that police forces have also disbanded 1,241 drug gangs in this period.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.
