President Hassan Rouhani says Iran is keen to enhance relations with Malaysia under the leadership of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. In a message on Saturday, the president congratulated the Malaysian leader on the anniversary of the Southeast Asian country’s Independence Day, Tasnim News Agency reported. Hailing the “cordial and brotherly” ties between the two nations, Rouhani said his government has the political will and determination to broaden economic, political and cultural relations. Mahathir, dubbed the “Father of Modern Malaysia” during his previous 22 years in power until 2003, was sworn in as the seventh prime minister in May after defeating a coalition that ruled the country for six decades since independence from Britain. In other messages later in the day, Rouhani congratulated his Uzbek and Kyrgyz counterparts on their Independence Day and National Day, respectively, and called for the strengthening of bilateral ties in all areas.
